The American Japanese artist created the Akari light sculptures in 1951, which include the Akari Floor Lamp. He gave these things the name “Akari,” which in Japanese means “light” and denotes both illumination and physical lightness.
The visit to the Japanese fishing village of Gifu, where Noguchi observed the fishermen at work, served as the source of inspiration for the design of his lights. Along with using trained cormorants for hunting, they also utilize lamps to entice fish to their nets. These lanterns had bamboo ribs that were wrapped in delicate paper.
He adapted the style of the customary lanterns for the occasion to make his own light sculptures out of wood and paper. The designer of the Akari Floor Lamp chose paper from the mulberry tree because it spreads and softens the light equally.
