The three-shade system was created by Ph in 1925–1926. The first lights created with the technique were created by PH in conjunction with for a Parisian exhibition. This collaboration persisted after his 1967 passing. PH used incandescent lights as a light source throughout his life in an effort to eliminate glare, focus light where it was most needed, and produce gentle shadows.
PH not only created a light but a complete system; over the years, around a thousand distinct models have been made. This extensive collection included a variety of chandeliers, which were particularly popular in the 1930s for lighting private residences from high ceilings, as well as table, floor, and wall lamps.
